Abstract: A process to treat dissolved hydrocarbon plume containing PCBs, phenols, PAHs and BTEX hydrocarbon species in groundwater has been developed. It involves treating contaminated groundwater aboveground in a treatment cell unit comprising of UV lights and ClO2. The treated groundwater was then injected in the treatment zone via injection wells with 30 ppm of ClO2 to provide in-situ chemical degradation of the dissolved plume. Injection wells configuration and chemical degradation dosage to maximize the remediation process were achieved empirically. Destruction efficiency greater than 99.9% has been achieved in the aboveground treatment cell. On the other hand, a reduction of 70% of dissolved organic contaminant species has been denoted in final groundwater samples after two years. More field research is being conducted to further inform and evaluate the efficiency of this remedial approach.
