Practices and Explorations in Parametric Modeling Rules Across
Subdomains of the Civil Engineering Industry
Beijing Yjk Building Software Co., Ltd. Beijing, China
Abstract: Based on practical experience, we discusses the computer modeling techniques required at different subdomains in engineering industry. For structural components, we distinguish between single-material elements and assembled systems demonstrating how their inherent properties dictate distinct modeling approaches. The composite materials section focuses on detailing specialized modeling requirements for reinforced concrete systems. The site modeling section compares traditional GIS terrain representations with the enhanced approach that incorporates geological layer data for engineering applications. A dedicated discussion of model-free computer applications explores alternative workflows using computer vision and image processing, including automated sketch rendering and structural defect detection. The paper concludes with a pragmatic perspective on the evolving relationship between 3D models and traditional engineering drawings, arguing for context-appropriate implementations rather than universal modeling mandates. This research provides actionable methodologies for implementing computer modeling technologies across diverse civil engineering domains while maintaining alignment with practical project requirements and industry standards.
