Abstract: Burnout represents a state of physical, mental and emotional exhaustion related to different stressors, whether in the workplace or in the educational field, which can have numerous repercussions on health and academic performance. Its opposite pole is engagement, which consists of a strong academic commitment on the part of students, who are motivated and energized to carry out their school activities. The objective of the present study is to analyze the relationship that exists between academic burnout syndrome and engagement in second-year medical students at FES Zaragoza. For this purpose, a cross-sectional study was carried out, the scope of which is correlational with a non-experimental design. The sample consisted of 37 second-year Medicine students, to whom the unidimensional student burnout scale, the UWES-9 engagement scale and a sociodemographic and academic data questionnaire were applied. The results show that with respect to the diagnosis of burnout, 68% of the students present mild burnout and 32% present moderate burnout. Regarding the engagement diagnosis, 51% of the students show average engagement. It was found that engagement has a negative correlation with burnout, that is; an inversely proportional relationship (Rho of -500, with a significant p value of 0.002).

Key words: academic performance, burnout, engagement, medical students
