A Multi-angle Analysis of “Gankuai (赶快), Ganmang (赶忙)

Is Based on the Corpus

Abstract: At present, there is a phenomenon of mutual interpretation of dictionary definitions, and the number of papers solely studying this group of words is extremely scarce. Based on the BCC corpus of Beijing Language and Culture University, this paper uses a combination of quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis to distinguish “gankuai(赶快)” and “ganmang(赶忙)”, from the aspects of syntax, semantics and pragmatics, paying less attention to their similarities, but more to reveal their differences. Through observation, the semantic features of already and not yet are the key to carry out discrimination. “gankuai” can be either already or not yet, while “ganmang” can only be already. By grasping this biggest difference, it can be found that many differences in syntax and pragmatics are related to it.
