Abstract: The objective of this research was to understand the leisure experience among university students of the physical education course in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. For data collection, we used a Google Forms, with open and closed questions, sent by email, for students from six Physical Education courses (two public and four private), from state of São Paulo, Brazil. The results point to intentions to expand working hours, indicating the need for livelihood; the desire to extend the hours for leisure experience in the form of bodily practices, watching series and virtual games; we also identified the will to expand the relationship with family/friends and dedication to religious/spiritual practices. Based on the results, we consider faster vaccination as the main way of facing the sanitary, economic, and social crisis that has directly interfered in the leisure experience of the Physical Education students surveyed, reflecting the general situation of the Brazilian, Latin American and Global South population. We note the need for digital inclusion, as low-income students and those living in peripheral or rural areas do not have proper electronic devices, data packages or stable internet access.

Key words: Brazil, leisure, COVID-19, physical education, epistemologies of the south
