Drama in Education — Active Learning and Creative Expression

Abstracts: How can drama students act independently and create their own way of learning by organizing a stage performance? Theatrical education should not simply show one how to put on a performance and practice body and voice expression; it should aim at a more profound understanding of self and the world. In the classes I teach I provide students with activities which go beyond the strict boundaries of a conventional educational approach and the knowledge gained is holistic rather than fragmentary. Through the use of digital media, theatrical improvisations, games, visits to museums and archeological sites as well as reference to other subjects from the curriculum the students and I pose questions, find answers and come up with original ideas and images. The end result is a play which we stage for the school and the local community.
