Stimulation to Scientific Research in Primary and Middle High Students as a Reply to a National Call

(Colegio La Arboleda, Cali, Colombia)

Abstract: This document describes the experience that was carried out during the 2017–2018 school year at La Arboleda School in Cali, Colombia, a member of Redcol, which arose from a proposal to offer the students of the institution an alternative to the traditional model of summative assessment at the end of each course. Noticing that there were a significant number of students who expressed nervousness and other symptoms of stress prior to the final examinations, the managers raised to the teachers the possibility of designing and implementing other assessing proposals. Since the school offers the Cambridge International curriculum in the English, Mathematics, and Science courses, it was not possible to have the students skipping such exams, but a call for papers launched by the Embassy of Spain in Colombia, through the Spanish Catholic Cultural and Educational Center Reyes Católicos from the city of Bogotá, for the first edition of the Manuel Elkin Patarroyo Prize for scientific research, made possible to comply with both requirements. Participation in the contest was offered as an alternative to students to get a score that might be assimilated to that of the final exam — The students’ response was massive and varied, managing to rank second in two of the three prize categories.

Key words: primary students, junior high school students, scientific research, projects, assessment
