Abstract: This study presents an experience of popular teacher training in the Program Salvador, City of Letters/Brazil Literate, in the city of Salvador, in Bahia-Brazil. In 2001 the project “For a School around Books” was implemented. The main goal of the project was to teach the students of the Program by reading books, in this case, the novels of Jorge Amado, a writer from the state of Bahia. The activities included the formation of coordinators and teachers, the reading of the main works by Jorge Amado, field lessons in locations that shelter stories and memories of the author (foundations, museums, squares etc.), and visitation of the instructors to the locations in order to give lectures presenting possibilities of alphabetization based on reading books. It is on the latter that this article focuses. It is expected that the sharing of this experience contributes to strengthen the activities of the popular education instructors in the context of Youngsters and Adults Education Program (EJA), especially concerning the considerations on reading and writing practice.

Key words: reading and writing possibilities, “for a school around books”, teacher education
