The implementation of student self- assessment in Primary Schools: The case of Greece

Abstract: Self- assessment is defined as the ability of someone to assess himself/ herself on the basis of defined criteria for future improvement. In recent years various researches conducted demonstrate that student self-assessment is positively correlated with improvement in learning outcomes. The present paper deals with the concept of student self- assessment and the benefits it has on student learning and school achievement according to contemporary literature. It also presents some efforts of the Greek Ministry of Education in order to promote the implementation of self-assessment. At the end, this paper describes the application of self-assessment in Greek primary schools and presents some examples of student self-assessment in primary school books.
