Foreign Language Education for Mongolian Students in Inner Mongolia

Abstract: In the late of 20th century, the bilingual education in primary and middle schools for Mongolian was implemented in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (IMAR), China. Mongolian students should master both their mother language and Chinese. Since 2001, the aim of the Mongolian education is to master Mongolian, Chinese and a foreign language as the basic requirement, the necessary standard and the development capability respectively. The development of language education planning reveals the rising requirement of language capability. This study adopts a descriptive approach to examining policy documents and general outcomes in the historical contexts to analyses Mongolian education plans in different periods and evaluates how policy outcomes feed back into the making and implementation cycle of foreign language education for ethnic minorities in Inner Mongolia.
