Abstracts: This study comprised an analysis and review of interviews of foreign counseling professionals in Japan from the perspective of communication for improved welfare. Analysis of the interviews with foreign counselors highlighted the following points. Foreign counselors (1) provided support that was responsive to the psychological state and circumstances of their clients; (2) served as intermediaries between different cultures; (3) explained the differences among different institutional systems and regulations; and (4) provided support based on long-range perspectives. These findings suggest that foreign counselors provide support that is aimed at helping their clients achieve well-being. Further, these forms of support arguably fulfill an instrumental role as a means of communication support for the promotion of welfare.
