Abstract: This article approaches aspects related to instrument learning, covering more specifically professional and amateur musicians. The study aims to ponder on typical features from both the acoustic and electric guitar learning process in Ouro Preto/MG. It takes into account the educational and cultural dimensions that underpin the educational background of these students. The study is based on a research from the music education field and related areas, as well as on empirical data collected from guitar players from Ouro Preto/MG. The research showed that the self-learning and private classes are crucial for the investigated guitar players’ training. The process of learning music is related to personal taste, values, personal experiences of each student, as well as to a way of expression. It is possible to state that self-learning and private teaching happen through asking, questioning, observing, reproducing and comparing oneself to other musicians, idols (musical role models), friends and family.
