Staff Perceptions of Subject Leaders’
Influence on Teaching and Learning Quality: A Case Study in a Boys’ School

Abstract: The focus of this study was
staff perceptions of middle level leadership influence on the quality of
teaching and learning in the school of this study. The research was conducted
in a boys’ through school in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The aim was to
evaluate the impact of subject leaders, heads of department and faculty, on the
quality of teaching and learning within their departments and to recognize
their challenges and aspirations to influence the teaching and learning quality.
The respondents were seven classroom teachers, seven subject leaders and the
school Vice Principal. Data was collected through; a questionnaire to subject
leaders, individual interviews with classroom teachers, subject leaders and the
school Vice Principal. Overall, staff responses suggested an influence of the
subject leaders on the quality of teaching and learning and possibilities to
increase this influence. Implications and future research suggestions of these
findings are discussed.
